Stepping in front of the camera can feel a little awkward at first—especially if you’ve never had a professional photoshoot, or if you’ve always had family or a partner there to interact with.

Solo portraits are a completely different experience, and it’s normal for them to feel unfamiliar at first.

The good news? I’m sharing my approach to a smooth, well-prepared personal branding session—one that’s thoughtfully planned so you can feel relaxed, confident, and free to create.

Below are my tips to help you feel prepared and at ease for your next personal branding shoot.

Clarify your vision.

Did you schedule a branding session to create intentional content for social media, elevate a new website or support the launch of something exciting? Defining your goals ahead of time ensures your images are not only beautiful, but purposeful—and it allows me, your photographer to shoot with intention.

Whether you need space for text overlays on your website or images cropped specifically for social platforms, clear communication makes all the difference. Before every session, my branding clients complete a thoughtful questionnaire that dives into their business and goals, so everything is aligned ahead of time. When shoot day arrives, the planning is done—and we’re free to create.

Planning your shot-list.

Are there any images you need to walk away with? Maybe it’s a modern headshot, a lifestyle moment of you working on your client's hair or something more expressive—like you at a cafe' downtown, celebrating the launch of your next big thing!

While I have a core shot list I move through during every branding session, no two shoots are ever the same. Knowing your must-have images allows me to design a session that feels intentional, personal, and uniquely you.

Colors/tones.

Consider the colors and tones that define your brand—your logo, color palette, and even the hues you consistently use on social media. If red is a signature part of your brand, that might look like bright red shoes to make your outfit pop or red hair clips for your product shots . Thoughtfully weaving your brand colors into your wardrobe, props, and surroundings brings your brand to life and creates imagery that feels intentional and cohesive.

Thoughtful props.

Props should feel intentional and relevent to your brand. The right details help tell your story, reinforce your brand, and bring authenticity to your images. Think about the items you naturally interact with in your day-to-day work—your laptop, notebook, camera, favorite coffee mug or tumbler or the tools you use most often in your business.

Now, let's add in your personality, the element that sets you apart from every other business professional. Is thrifting a huge part of who you are? Let's go vintage. Thrive best surrounded my music? Let's showcase your love of music and tie it back to your business. There are so many creative ways to let your personality shine through.

When chosen thoughtfully, props support your goals and must-have shots while subtly weaving in your brand’s colors and personality. A well-loved journal, a signature accessory, or even the texture of your workspace can add depth and context to your images without distracting from you. The goal is cohesion—images that feel effortless, aligned, and most importantly YOU.

Beauty prep.

This is your moment to indulge in a little pampering. A branding session is entirely focused on you, and paying attention to the details ahead of time helps you show up feeling confident and polished. Fresh nails, fresh color, a style you love and outfits that make you feel your best all go a long way. Scheduling nails 1-2 days before your session is recommended and consider HMU for the day of your session.

I've got you.

You don’t have to have it all figured out—but this is the basic blue print to a successful branding session. This is all about capturing you, not perfection. From outfit choices to props to posing, I’ll guide you every step of the way. My goal is to make this experience effortless, fun, and empowering, so you can show up fully confident in front of the camera. You bring your energy, your vision, and your story—I’ll handle the rest!
